About Us

The Regional Centre for Urban & Environmental Studies (RCUES) at All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), Mumbai is established by the now Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), earlier Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India (GoI) in 1968 to undertake urban policy research, technical advisory services and strengthening work capabilities of municipal officials and elected representatives from the States of Goa, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan and UT's of Diu, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli and Lakshadweep in the western region and States of Assam and Tripura in the northeast region. RCUES, Mumbai is recognized as a National Training Institute (NTI) and is supported by the MoHUA, GoI. The Principal Secretary, Urban Development Department of Government of Maharashtra (GoM) is the ex-officio Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the RCUES, Mumbai.

Capacity Building

In order to improve infrastructure and basic service delivery of urban areas, the MoHUA, GoI launched various urban development missions. Municipal functionaries and elected representatives from ULBs are key actors in effective implementation of these missions at city level.
RCUES, Mumbai is committed to support effective implementation of these programmes to achieve the outcomes as envisaged in the Mission Guidelines, by undertaking structured capacity building programmes for the ULBs. Thus, RCUES, Mumbai's calendar for the year 2019-20 is developed in alignment with the State and ULB level agenda, to facilitate achievement of targets in the given time frame under the various programmes and missions.

Research Studies

RCUES conducted a Research Study in 2018-19, ' Feasibility of Cluster level Dry Waste Management for the Urban Local Bodies of Maharashtra'. It was conducted in continuation with previous year’s study, ‘Identifying market potential for recyclable dry waste in Maharashtra’. The report has identified the parameters that affect the feasibility of cluster level dry waste management. Based on the assessment of 60+ cities, visits conducted to 24 cities and interviews conducted with 74 recycling industries, feasibility was assessed and potential 10 clusters were identified in consultation with Government of Maharashtra (GoM).
